Dr. Robinson currently teaches mathematics at the Brandon Campus and served as the Ybor City Campus President of Hillsborough Community College from September 2007 through December 2018. Prior to joining Hillsborough Community College, he served as a mathematics professor, Library Director, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Advisor, Academic Assistant to the Provost, and Dean of Social Sciences and Physical Education at Valencia [Community] College, Orlando, Florida over a fifteen-year period. As a servant-leader, he actively promotes open communication about key issues that impact the functioning of the college/campus from teaching methodologies and the use of learning technologies to procedure and policy changes that enhance student learning and collaborative campus governance. In his administrative positions, Dr. Robinson led through trust, relationship building, support, accountability, and leadership-by-example in a safe and supportive environment. He is an author on personal and organizational leadership development, an attorney, and a consultant for non-profit organizations. Dr. Robinson advocates for children, the arts, community and social issues, economic development, student learning, and civic engagement.
As a representative of Hillsborough Community College in the Tampa and Ybor City communities, Dr. Robinson served as a board member of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce (past Secretary), the Ybor City Development Corporation (past Chair), and the Tampa/Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission. He continues to serve on the board of the Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County (Vice Chair). Additionally, Dr. Robinson is a past President of the Tampa Kiwanis Club and its Club Foundation Board of Directors. Shawn is currently the Lt. Governor for the Florida Kiwanis District's Division 14 (Hillsborough County). He remained active with his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, and served on the UCF Florida Iota Chapter Housing Corporation Board as its Secretary for twenty years.
He also served on the Florida A & M University College of Law Board of Visitors, the Tampa Historic Streetcar, and Hillsborough Kids boards as well as on the City of Tampa Cultural Assets Taskforce. He was also a co-advisor for the Ybor City Campus Chess Club and the Brandon Campus LGBTQ Club. He is the current Secretary/Treasurer of the Steel Dragons Independent Motorcycle Association of Florida.
Dr. Robinson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education, a Master of Education degree in Mathematics Education and a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida. He holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Florida A & M University College of Law and is a member of the Florida Bar.
He is the published author of three leadership books, Six Heads are Better than None (2018), Broken Liver (2019), and Wing Night (2020). Six Heads and Broken Liver were 2023 winners in the Literary Global Book Awards Business - Entrepreneurship and Management categories, respectively, with all three leadership books being named a finalist in the Nonfiction - Inspirational category.
After Wing Night, he began writing fiction with a murder mystery set during a poker night, entitled She Folds (2021), and a book about an Ybor City mob that launders money through a childcare center in Launder Care (2022). Both She Folds and Launder Care were recognized as Finalists in the American Book Fest International Books Awards Novella Contest in 2022. His 2023 collection of short stories, The Dreamer and the Dreams: A Short Story Series was a winner in the Literary Global Book Awards for Best Cover Design and a finalist in the Fiction - Cross-Genre category.
In 2022, he began his podcast series, 15 Minutes with Dr. Shawn, which focuses on leadership and personal awareness. His books have also been presented as part of the Tampa/Ybor City Saturday Market, the Tampa Cuban Sandwich Festival, the Oxford Exchange Book Fair, and the Inaugural Tampa International Book Fair. In 2019, he became a licensed real estate sales associate to enhance the reach of his legal research and consulting practice.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, golf, chess, Xbox, all things Star Wars, and riding motorcycles.
